Helen Mirren attended Hamlet Court primary school in Westcliff-on-Sea, where she had the lead role in a school production of “Hansel and Gretel”. She also attended St. Bernard’s High School of Girls in Southend-on-Sea. After high school, she attended the New College of Speech and Drama in London.

Helen Mirren auditioned and was accepted for the National Youth Theatre (NYT) at age eighteen. At age 18, she played Cleopatra in the NYT production of Anthony and Cleopatra, a role that launched her career. Due to her work for the NYT, she was invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).

In 1975, she played the role of a rock star named Maggie in the West End’s Royal Court Theatre, “Teeth ‘n’ Smiles”.

Mirren has also made numerous appearances in a number of films throughout her career. She has appeared in the following films “Herostratus”, “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Age of Consent”, “O Lucky Man!”, “Caligula”, “The Long Good Friday” among others.

Mirren also starred in “Gosford Park”, “Calendar Girls”, “The Clearing”, “Pride”, “Raising Helen”, “Shadowboxer”. She also provided the voice for the supercomputer “Deep Thought” in the film “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.
