Michael Eric Dyson was born on October 23, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, United States of America. His mother, Addie Mae Leonard was a paraprofessional. He was adopted by his stepfather, Everett Dyson, who was an autoworker.
Education
Michael Dyson attended Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, on an academic scholarship, however, he left and completed his education at Northwestern High School. He took a job in factories in Detroit to support his family before entering Knoxville College as a freshman at the age of 21.
In 1985, Dyson obtained his bachelor’s degree, manga cum laude from Carson-Newman College. He proceeded to receive a PhD in religion from Princeton University in 1993.
Career
Michael Dyson taught in different universities including the Chicago Theological Seminary, Brown University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Columbia University, DePaul University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
From 2007 to 2020, Dyson was a Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University. In 2021, Dyson relocated to Vanderbilt University. Dyson was also a visiting professor at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.
As an author, Dyson has published and edited numerous books. In 1994, he published the book “Making Malcolm: The Myth and Meaning of Malcolm X ” which later became a New York Times notable book of the year.
