Early Life
Jorge Mendes was born on January 7, 1966, in Lisbon, Portugal. Mendes began as a footballer but was forced to abandon his dream of becoming a professional after being rejected by a number of Portuguese clubs.
Mendes left his dream profession to work as a DJ. He later opened a video shop, bar and nightclub in Caminha, northern Portugal.
Career
Mendes began his career as a football agent in 1996 when he brokered Nuno Espírito Santo’s move form Vitória de Guimarães to Deportivo de La Coruña. After the deal, he gradually attracted the interest of more Portuguese players, including Jorge Andrade.
In 2002, he engineered his first international transfer for Hugo Viana’s move from Sporting CP to Newcastle United for around €12 million. In 2004, Mendes’s popularity grew after he brokered José Mourinho’s move from Porto to manage Chelsea, despite Mourinho already having an agent.
The deal established Mendes’ importance. He built up a roster of the leading Portuguese players and every Portuguese player that followed Mourinho to Chelsea was a client of Mendes, including Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira, Tiago, and Maniche. He was paid by Chelsea to act for the player and for the club.
Mendes also oversaw Cristiano Ronaldo’s £12.24 million transfer from Sporting CP to Manchester United in 2003, as well as Anderson and Nani’s £46 million transfers to the same club in 2007. Mendes was also in charge of the transfers of Pepe to Real Madrid for £25 million and Simo to Atlético Madrid for £16.5 million that summer.
In 2008, GestiFute, a company founded by Mendes announced that it had entered into a partnership with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in the United States to “create global opportunities for current and future clients”, following CAA’s expansion into the sports market.
On August 27, 2021, Jorge Mendes facilitated Christiano Ronaldo’s transfer £21.4 million transfer from Juventus back to Manchester United.
