Early Life
Marvin Lewis was born on September 23, 1958, in McDonald, Pennsylvania. He attended Fort Cherry High School, and while there, he was on the wrestling team and also played baseball in the summers. He started playing football at 9 years of age as the safety and quarterback for his high school team.
He was granted a scholarship to attend Idaho State University and there, he played the linebacker. Lewis received both his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a master’s degree in Athletic Administration from Idaho State University.
Career
Marvin Lewis began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Idaho State before going ahead to become the team’s linebackers coach for four seasons (1981-1984). During his first year with the team, Idaho State won the NCAA Division 1-AA Championship.
Marvin Lewis was an assistant coach for the following durations: Long Beach State University (1985-1986), University of New Mexico (1987-1989), and University of Pittsburgh (1990-1992).
At the National Football League level, Lewis interned as a coach with the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers before he was hired as the Linebackers Coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1992. In 1996, the Baltimore Ravens hired Lewis as their defensive coordinator, and he held the position for six seasons (1996-2001). He proved his worth as a future head coach when the Ravens defeated the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV, thanks to a defence team coached by him.
Even though Lewis was a prime candidate for several NFL head coaching jobs, he was passed over each time. He Became head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccanneers in 2002 and was hired by the Washington Redskins as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
Lewis declined head coaching positions in the college ranks with the University of California, Berkeley, and Michigan State University because he wanted to pursue his goal of becoming a head coach in the NFL.
In 2003, Lewis became the head coach, Cincinnati Bengals. His tenure oversaw improved fortunes for the Bengals who were struggling and he helped transform the team into postseason contenders. Lewis ended their winning droughts of over 13 years and led them to their first AFC North division title in fifteen years.
He has coached numerous teams including Idaho State, Linebackers, Long Beach State, New Mexico, amongst others.
