His father, Cyril deGrasse Tyson, was a sociologist, human resources commissioner, and director of Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited, and his mother, Sunchita Maria Tyson, was a gerontologist for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
Tyson has two siblings: Stephen Joseph Tyson and Lynn Antipas Tyson. Together, they grew up in the Castle Hill neighbourhood of the Bronx and later in Riverdale. Tyson is of Puerto Rican descent from his mother’s side.

Tyson attended the Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy and Bronx High School of Science, graduating in 1979. Thereafter, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he majored in physics, and graduated with a BA degree in physics in 1980. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned an MA degree in astronomy in 1983.
Tyson taught astronomy at the University of Maryland from 1986 to 1987 before being accepted into the astronomy graduate program at Columbia University, where he earned an MPhil degree in astrophysics in 1989, and a PhD degree in astrophysics in 1991.
Career
Tyson joined the Hayden Planetarium in 1994 as a staff scientist and rose to the director position in 1996. Neil began writing a monthly column for “Natural History” magazine in 1995. He has also contributed to several scholarly publications. In the early 2000s, President George W. Bush appointed Tyson to the President’s Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy and the Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry. In 2004, Tyson also served as the host of the PBS miniseries “Origins.”
In addition to hosting “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” in 2014 and the “StarTalk” podcast in 2009, Tyson also started hosting “Nova ScienceNow” in 2006. The show was turned into a late-night talk show by the National Geography Channel, in 2015.
