Victor Ortiz was born on January 31, 1987, in Garden City, Kansas, United States of America. His father, Victor Ortiz Sr. and his mother Mrs Ortiz are of Mexican descent. Ortiz is the third child of five children. Victor was seven when his mother abandoned the family leaving his father to singlehandedly raise the family.

His father pushed him into boxing. Sadly he became an alcoholic and took out his aggression on his children by physically abusing them. Their father eventually walked away from them, abandoning them to foster care.

Career

Victor Ortiz’s amateur career started when he was 16 and he won the 132-pound weight division with a perfect 5-0 record in a Junior Olympics tournament. He was initially noticed by former heavyweight boxing contender Ron Lyle and later by Roberto Garcia, known for holding the IBF Super Featherweight Championship during the 1990s. One of his most memorable early amateur fights was against Amir Khan, although he lost in a second-round stoppage.

Garcia adopted Ortiz and so he moved from Colorado to California, to be trained and raised by Garcia at La Colonia Youth Boxing Club. Ortiz graduated from Pacifica High School. By the time he was 16, Ortiz participated in and won the 2003 Police Athletic League national championships in Toledo. A year later, Ortiz participated in the United States Olympic boxing trials in the 132-pound weight class but was defeated in the champion’s bracket.

Ortiz’s original trainers included Ignacio “Buck” Avila, Manuel Rios, Antonio Orozco Sr., Juan M. Aldana Jr., and Alfred Ritz, who all combined their years of experience and exposure to training him.

After turning professional, Ortiz easily won his first seven fights against his opposition. On March 7, 2009, Ortiz had his first bout televised on HBO Boxing After Dark against Mike Arnaoutis of Greece. Ortiz won by a technical knockout of Arnaoutis in the second round.
