Kamarudeen “Kamaru” Usman was born on May 11, 1987, in Auchi, Edo State, Nigeria. His father, Muhammed Nasiru Usman was a major in the Nigerian Army who later became a pharmacist in the United States and his mother was a teacher.
Kamaru has two brothers Mohammed Usman and Kashetu Usman. His family immigrated to Dallas, Texas when he was eight years old.

Kamaru Usman attended Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas where he started wrestling. After high school, he attended William Penn University in Iowa. He later transferred to the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK).
Career
Kamaru Usman started his professional mixed martial art career as a wrestling coach for Team Miller in The Ultimate Fighter season fourteen. Following his failure to qualify for the 2012 US Olympic Team Trials in freestyle wrestling, he made his professional MMA debut in November 2012.
In February 2015, he was selected as one of the fighters on The Ultimate Fighter 21. In his TUF debut, Usman faced undefeated Titan FC Welterweight Champion Micheal Graves, winning the bout by majority decision.
