Marcus Maron attended Highland High School. Thereafter, he enrolled at Boston University, graduating with a bachelors of arts degree in English literature, in 1986.

Marcus Maron performed his first standup in 1987 at the age of 24. However, he started professionally at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles where he became an associate of Sam Kinison. Thereafter, he moved to New York City and became part of the New York alternative comedy scene.

Maron provided his voice in an episode of “Dr Katz, Professional Therapist” and hosted Short Attention Span Theater. Thereafter, he recorded half-hour specials for HBO and Comedy Central Presents as well as other comedy shows.

Maron released his first one-man show, Jerusalem Syndrome in 2000. In 2009, he began another one-man show, Scorching The Earth. In 2013, Maron released his first hour-long special, Marc Maron: Thinky Pain via Netflix. This was followed by another special, More Later, released in December 2015.

In 2004, Maron co-hosted Morning Sedition, a three-hour early-morning radio show with Mark Riley. Thereafter, he began hosting a nighttime radio program with Jim Earl as a sidekick for KTLK Progressive Talk at 1150 AM in Los Angeles called The Marc Maron Show.

On September 1, 2009, Maron began a twice-weekly podcast called WTF with Marc Maron.
