Christopher Gilbert Pérez was born on August 14, 1969, in San Antonio, Texas, United States. His father, Gilbert Pérez, was a computer programmer and his mother, Carmen Medina was a homemaker. His parents divorced in 1974. Chris Pérez is of Mexican descent.
During his middle school days, Perez learned to play the French horn. He joined his school’s concert band before deciding to learn how to play electric guitar. He was resilient in his decisions in music despite his mother’s disapproval due to the negative stereotypes associated with the rock-and-roll world. Pérez had favourite musicians in Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, and the Scorpions.
Career
Chris Perez started his music career at the age of 17 in Los Angeles. At that time, he was offered the chance to join Shelly Lares’ band by Shelly Lares’ cousin, Tony Lares. He decided to join the band even because he had no interest in that genre of music, but had to due to money problems. In 1989, he started writing songs and working as Shelly’s musical director.
Perez became a well-respected guitarist in Tejano music, and Abraham Quintanilla selected him to join his band, Selena y Los Dinos. He later sacks Perez from the band because of his romantic relationship with his daughter, Selena Quintanilla. Perez returned to the band after his marriage to Selena. The band got dissolved after his wife was murdered by a former nurse, Yolanda Saldívar, in 1995.
Perez later formed his own after his name. The band’s debut album, “Resurrection”, became a massive hit as it won a Grammy Award for the Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album. The band disbanded in 2002 after releasing their second album, “Una Noche Mas”.
Chris has also worked with A.B. Quintanilla III in the m Kumbia Kings and Kumbia All-Starz musical groups2010; he formed another band called the Chris Perez Project with Puerto Rican singer Angel Ferrer.
