Clayton Holmes Aiken was born on November 30, 1978, in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States of America. Clay was still a toddler when his father Vernon Grissom deserted the family and was raised by his mother, Faye Aiken.
At 19, Aiken changed his surname from “Grissom” to “Aiken” with the permission of his mother and maternal grandfather.
As regards his education, Aiken went to Raleigh’s Leesville Road High School. Following his graduation, he took courses at Campbell University before enrolling at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Aiken had always had an interest in people with special needs so he realized that he could make a difference in the lives of such people. He went on to pursue a degree and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in special education in December 2003.

After participating and finishing second place on the “American Idol” reality TV show in 2003, Aiken released his debut album “Measure of a Man.” In its first week, the album sold over 600,000 units and went double platinum – that was enough to thrust Aiken into the limelight. He then followed up with a Christmas album before returning with another studio album called “A Thousand Different Ways.”
