Early Life
Though Doug Marcaida’s birth details are not available, he is of American and Filipino descent and was born in the Phillippines. His family moved from the Philippines to the United States of America with his mother and siblings. Upon arriving in the US, he and his family settled in the Hudson Avenue neighbourhood in northeast Rochester.
His interest in martial arts began at the age of 8, however, he did not begin formal training in the arts until he was 16. At age 25, he began to pursue the Filipino martial art of Kali, which is weapon-based fighting using knives, sticks, bladed weapons, and other improvised weapons, and also teacher open hand techniques without weapons.
Professional Career
Doug Marcaida worked hard at honing his skills over time and eventually gained enough experience to set up his style of Kali which he called ‘Marcaida Kali’. He stated categorically that the main aim of Marcaida Kali is not to harm but to protect.
Over the years, his expertise began to introduce him, he became a consultant in Armed combat and was hired on contract to the US military. He served in the US Air Force for 8 years, and then pursued a career as a Respiratory Therapist for 20 years, all the while teaching and honing his skills as a Filipino martial artist.
Armed with his knowledge and experience with weapons, he started designing his weapons which gained massive acceptance and many of them have been used in films. These great designs of his that showed his expertise gained him recognition and led him to be a consultant in a lot of high-profile Hollywood films.
Marcaida later accepted an invitation to become a judge for the TV series called ‘Forged in Fire’ on the History channel. A show which showcases bladesmiths as they forge bladed weapons. The show gained popularity and led to a spin-off: ‘Forged in Fire: Knife or Death’ hosted by WWE Hall of Fame member, Bill Goldberg.

Marcaida is married, however, his personal life is largely vague. he prefers to keep the details of his married life very private, especially that of his wife.
