Latrell Sprewell is an American former professional basketball player with an estimated net worth of $200,000. During his active years. Sprewell played for the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks, and the Minnesota Timberwolves in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Sprewell is best known for receiving four NBA All-Star selections and an All-NBA First Team selection during his active years. When Sprewell played for NYKs, the team made it to the 1999 NBA Finals; Sprewell did the same when he played for Timberwolves assisting them to the 2004 Western Conference finals.

Unfortunately, an impulsive outrage against the then Warriors coach, P. J. Carlesimo, in 1997 started his career on a downward spin with an initial 68 game suspension. It was said that Sprewell attacked Carlesiom by choking and punching him during practice.

Early Life

Latrell Fontaine Sprewell was born on September 8, 1970, in Milwaukee Wisconsin, United States of America. His father’s name is Latoska Field and his mother’s name is Pamela Sprewell. Sprewell grew up in Milwaukee before moving to Flint, Michigan. His parents separated during his high school days.

Education

Latrell Sprewell attended the Washington High School where he was an active member of the basketball team during his senior year. Thereafter, he joined the Three Rivers Community College and became part of their Raiders Basketball team where he played for two years. He then transferred to the University of Alabama where he played till 1992.

Career

Sprewell was selected to play for the Golden State Warriors and wasted no time in making a clear impression. Sprewell was so good that he was featured in 69 of the 77 games, averaging 15.4 points per game. Sprewell’s efforts paid off as his team started rising at the league table.

A major dark cloud over on Sprewell’s career happened when he attacked and verbally abused the then head coach P. J. Carlesimo during a Warriors practise in Oakland. Carlesimo had tried to stir him to do better in terms of passing but Sprewell snapped and retorted. It escalated when Carlesimo approached Sprewell and Sprewell choked him for a while.

This was not the first time Sprewell would be so physically violent for that matter. In 1995, Sprewell attacked a teammate Jerome Kersey; in 1993 practice, Sprewell also fought with Byron Houston.

After his suspension and punishment because of his violence towards the then coach, Sprewell did not play again until February 1999 after the Warriors traded him to the New York Knicks for John Starks, Chris Mills, and Terry Cummings. Sprewell played 37 games for the Knicks that season, playing off the bench in all but four games.

Sadly on October 31, 2004, the Minnesota Timberwolves offered Sprewell a three-year, $21 million contract extension, lower than what his then-current contract paid him. Sprewell decline the offer because he felt insulted.

Throughout his career, Sprewell started 868 of the 913 games he played in, averaging 18.8 ppg, 4.2 apg, and 4.1 rpg with playoff career averages of 19.7 ppg, 3.4 apg, and 4.3 rpg. He was elected to the All-NBA First Team at the end of his second season and to the All-NBA Defensive second team that same year.
