Jefferson attended Alief Elsik High School in Alief, Houston. While in high school, she formed a musical group called Cornwor Clique with her friends. This was when she adopted the nickname “Lizzo” a variant of “Lissa” inspired by Jay-Z’s “Izzo (H.O.V.A)”. Following her graduation, she enrolled to study classical music focusing on flute at the University of Houston.
