Nathaniel Eugene Burleson was born on August 19, 1981, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His father, Alvin Burleson played defensive back for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and his mother, Valerie Lynn Burleson was a homemaker.
Nathaniel has three brothers, older brothers, Alvin jr., and Kevin and younger brother Lyndale Burleson. His family moved to the United States in 1983 when his father signed with the Los Angeles Express of the United State Football League (USFL).

Nate Burleson attended Rainier View Elementary School in Seattle. Burleson also attended Lindbergh High School and transferred to O’Dea High School in Seatle where he graduated. Burleson got a scholarship to study at the University of Nevada, Reno where he played for the Nevada Wolf Pack. Nate graduated with a degree in human development and family studies.
Career
Burleson was selected in the third round as the 71st overall pick of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. His rookie season was quite disappointing. Burleson is the only player in NFL history to have three punt returns of 90 or more yards.
In March 2006, Burleson signed a seven-year $49 million offer sheet to play with his hometown Seattle Seahawks. He owns the Seahawk team record for most punt return yards in a single season as well as career punt return yards.
