Ree Drummond attended Bartlesville High School, graduating in 1987. Thereafter she moved to Los Angeles, California where she enrolled at the University of Southern California where she graduated in 1991, having first studied journalism before switching to gerontology.

In May 2006, Drummond started her blogging under the subdomain pioneerwoman.typepad.com within the Typepad blogging service but went on to register her own domain thepioneerwoman.com on October 18, 2006. The blog’s name was initially Confessions of a Pioneer Woman.
On the blog, Drummond writes about topics such as ranch life and homeschooling. About a year after launching her blog, she posted her first recipe and a tutorial on How to Cook a Steak.
