Dan started his career in the US Army. He left the Army to study at the University. Following his graduation, got a job as a financial analyst on Wall Street. Peña went on to become president of Great Western Resources, Inc., a Housten-based oil company listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1984.
In 1992, he was removed as the president of the company and subsequently awarded $3.3 million by an American jury for suing the company over his dismissal.
Peña also worked in different companies like Webber, Jackson, Paine & Curtis. A few years later, he was appointed President and CEO of Kennedy Industrial Inc. He also served as Chairman of JPK Industries, Inc. With his great business idea, JPK Industries generated $50 million in revenue in three years.
In 1982, he became the founder of a Housten-based natural resource company known as Great Western Resoruces Inc. The company had significant growth in eight years, generating revenue of more than $430 million. He worked as Chairman and CEO of the company till 1992.
In 1984, Peña bought Guthrie Castle in Angus, Scotland, from which he has operated several businesses. In 1997, he founded Guthrie Group, named after the castle that he bought in 1984.
