Thomas Wesley Pentz was born on November 10, 1978, in Tupelo, Mississippi, United States of America. He is the son of Barbara Jean (née Cox) and Thomas Pentz. Diplo is of German and English descent.
Following his graduation from a local high school, he proceeded to the University of Central Florida in 1997. While at the university, he worked as a DJ at a local radio station WPRK.
He then moved to Philadelphia to continue his studies at Temple University, where he first garnered attention as a DJ. He got acquainted with fellow DJ Low Budget and together began throwing parties under the name “Hooked on Hollertronix”.
Career
Following the success of their parties, Diplo and his fellow group member, DJ Low Budget began releasing mixtapes. One of such is “Never Scared” which was named one of The New York Times’ top ten albums of 2003. The group soon became famous for featuring guests artists in their parties.
Following his success with his Hooked on Hollertronix parties, Diplo moved to the next level of his career, and build “The Mausoleum”, a video studio, recording studio, record label office, gallery, and event space in Philadelphia.
