Howard Michael Mandel was born on November 29, 1955, in the Willowdale area of North York, Ontario, Canada. He was born to Al Mandel (father) and Evy Mandel (mother).
For his education, Mandel attended William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute. However, he did not graduate because he was expelled for impersonation.
Career
Following his expulsion from school, Howie got a job as a carpet salesman. He then started stand-up comedy soon after. On a Los Angeles trip, Mandel performed a set at The Comedy Store which got him a job as a regular performer.
Subsequently, he was booked for several appearances for the comedy game show “Make Me Laugh”. He got other comedy gigs and film roles in the 1980s.
Mandel rose into prominence in the US following his role as Dr Wayne Fiscus in the series “St. Elsewhere”. He also appeared on the game show “Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour”. Mandel also landed movie roles including the voice of Gizmo in the 1984 hit “Gremlins” and its 1990 sequel “Gremlins 2: The New Batch”.
