In his mid-teens year, 15 precisely, Lil Jay was arrested for robbery and was sentenced for a year to a youth detention centre. It was at the centre that Lil Tjay began writing raps.

Lil Tjay started writing and rapping in his mid-teens but it was until he was 16 in 2016 that he released his first song “Resume” on SoundCloud. Lil Tjay also started gaining popularity then.
