Åsenhöga, Småland, Sweden. In 1970, his family moved to Borås, and he spent his childhood in the Hestra quarter. His father, Sven was an economist while his mother, Brita worked as a teacher.In 1990, Lorentzon began his studies at the Chalmers University of Technology where he studied industrial economics and later finished with a master of science and engineering degree. He then proceeded to attend economics courses at Gothenburg School of Business, Economics, and Law. Still, in his quest for knowledge, Martin also studied economics at the Stockholm School of Economics and took courses in rhetoric and argumentation at Stockholm University.

Lorentzon started his career as an intern in the telephone company, Telia in 1995. He then moved to San Francisco to work with AltaVista. While in Silicon Valley, Lorentzon met other skilled web entrepreneurs and proceeded to found a job investment company called Cell Ventures.
