For his education, Walters attended Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music & Art, where he studied visual art. Here he met Dana Dane and together they formed the Kangol Crew.
Career
Walters began his career in 1985 and then gain prominence after joining Doug E. Fresh’s “Get Fresh Crew”. At that time, he was performing under the stage name MC Ricky D. He was then featured on the singles “The Show” and “La Di Da Di”.
A year later, Slick Rick was signed as the third artist to Def Jam Records. In 1988, he released his first album”The Great Adventure of Slick Rick”. The album was a success as it soon gained the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
In 1991, Slick released his second studio album “The Ruler’s Back”. Three years later he released his third studio album “Behind Bars” while he was still incarcerated.
In 1991, he dropped his fourth album “The Art of Storytelling”. This album unlike the previous two was a success and made the No. 1 position on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart.
Slick Rick got his U.S. citizenship on April 15, 2016. He described this as his proud moment, and feel honored to finally become an American citizen. He also retains his UK citizenship.
