Sloane Stephens was born on March 20, 1993, in Plantation, Florida, United States of America. Her father, John Stephens was a football player and her mother, Sybil Stephens was a swimmer. Sloane was raised by her mother and her stepfather, Sheldon Farrell. She has a half-brother Shawn Farrell.

Sloane Stephens began her career by competing in low-level events on the ITF Junior Circuit in 2006 at the age of 13.
