Steven Hiroyuki Aoki was born on November 30, 1977, in Miami, Florida. His father’s name is Rocky Aoki and he was a restaurateur who founded the popular Japanese cuisine restaurant chain Benihana while his mother’s name is Chizuru Kobayashi.
Aoki is of Japanese descent and he grew up with his parents and siblings, sister Kana, and brother Kevin in Newport Beach, California. Steve also has a half-sister, Devon Aoki.
For his education, Aoki attended Newport Harbor High School graduating in 1995. Following his graduation from high school, he enrolled at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he graduated with two B.A. degrees, one in feminist studies and the other in sociology.
He started pursuing an interest in music while he college. He would go ahead to form his own record label, which he named Dim Mak in 1996.

Aoki started his career as a record label owner. Subsequently, he teamed up with Blake Miller of the Los Angeles-based band Moving Units to produce remixes. The duo worked under the name, Weird Science. Aoki has also been a member of numerous band groups including This Machine Kills.
In January 2008, Aoki released his debut DJ mix album, “Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles”. Aoki has also collaborated with fellow producers and has released singles with numerous artists. He has also remixed many artists and bands including, Drake, Eminem, Refused, Kanye West amongst others.
