Udonis Johneal Haslem was born on June 9, 1980, in Miami, Florida, United States of America. His father, John Haslem is American while his mother is Debra, is a Puerto Rican. Haslem’s father played college basketball for the Stetson Hatters from 1972 to 1974.
For his education, Haslem attended Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Thereafter, he preceded to Miami Senior High School in Miami. While in school, Haslem helped lead Miami High to state titles in 1997 and 1998 (the last two of three in a row), playing alongside a present NBA player, Steve Blake.
Following his graduation from high school, Haslem proceeded to the University of Florida, where he obtained a degree in Leisure Service Management.
Career
Haslem accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Haslem studied Leisure Service Management there while he played for Coach Billy Donovan’s Gators teams from 1998 to 2002.
He went undrafted in the 2002 NBA draft largely due to his lack of size; he measured just 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) at the NBA pre-draft camp. Haslem signed with Chalon-Sur-Saône of the French LNB Pro A, where he trained into shape (he lost 50 pounds, 23 kg, in eight months).
On August 6, 2003, Haslem signed with his hometown team, the Miami Heat. As a rookie, he played in the Rookie Challenge during All-Star weekend, earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honours, and helped the Heat reach the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Haslem helped the Heat return to the NBA Finals in 2012. The team defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games, with Haslem winning his second championship. On August 15, 2021, Haslem re-signed with the Heat.
