His father, William Aloysious Maher Jr., worked as a network news editor and radio announced and his mother, Julie Maher worked as a nurse. Bill Maher attended Pascack Hills High School in New Jersey, graduating in 1974. He then went to Cornell University to graduate with a degree in English and History from the School of Arts & Sciences.

Bill Maher started his career as a comedian and actor. In 1979, he hosted the New York City comedy club Catch a Rising Star. In 1982, Maher began appearing on Johnny Carson’s and David Letterman’s shows. He also made numerous TV appearances including on “Sara”, “Max Headroom”, “Murder, She Wrote”, “Charlie Hoover”, “Newhart” among others.
