Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini was born on October 21, 1995, in Los Angeles, California, United States of America. Her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a South African actor of Zulu descent, and her mother, Deborah Sawyer, is a Jewish-American graphic designer.
Dlamini lived for five years in Rye, New York with her maternal grandmother, a Jewish architect and painter. Her family then moved to California in Oak Park where she started attending dance lessons.
