Education

Dwight Gooden attended Hillsborough High School in Tampa where he was a teammate on the school’s baseball team with Vance Lovelace.

Career

As a 19-year-old rookie in 1984, Gooden made his MLB debut for the Mets. Owing to his abilities then, Gooden became widely known as one of the league’s most talented pitchers. It was then no surprise that Gooden got the first of four All-Star selections, won the National League (NL) Rookie of the Year Award, and led the league in strikeouts.

Gooden’s winnings continued into 1985 when he won the NL Cy Young Award and achieved the pitching Triple Crown, compiling a 24–4 record and a league-leading 1.53 ERA, 268 strikeouts, and 16 complete games. Then in the 1986 season, Gooden’s amazing plays helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series.

Gooden’s woes started in December 1986 when he was arrested in Tampa, Florida after being assaulted by police. Though the grounds for arrest were unclear, rumours of substance abuse arose and were confirmed when Gooden tested positive for cocaine during spring training in 1987. Gooden voluntarily opted for a rehabilitation centre on April 1, 1987, with the hope that it would save him from being suspended and it did. Gooden’s days in the centre meant he missed a third of the season, yet, in his strides as an amazing player, Gooden won 15 games for the 1987 Mets.

More woes befell Gooden when he suffered a shoulder injury in 1989 and 1991. These injuries equally marred his career chances. Gooden’s career took a worse turn in 1992 when he lost as many as 10 decisions. In 1993, there was no improvement, as Gooden finished 12–15.

The following season, the 1994 season, Gooden tested positive for cocaine use and was suspended for 60 days. While still serving the suspension, Gooden tested positive again to cocaine. Gooden was further suspended for the entire 1995 season. The day after receiving the second suspension, Gooden’s wife, Monica, found him in his bedroom with a loaded gun to his head.

After his suspension, Gooden signed with the New York Yankees in 1996 as a free agent. Gooden was with the Yankees till 1998 when he signed with Cleveland Indians. He failed to win a postseason game, going 0–4 in the course of nine postseason starts over eight series.

Gooden retired in 2001 after he was cut by the Yankees in spring training, ending his career with a record of 194–112. More than half of those wins came before age 25.

After retiring, Gooden took a job in the Yankees’ front office. Gooden also acted as the go-between man during free-agent contract negotiations between his nephew, Gary Sheffield, and the Yankees before the 2004 season. In July 2009 he was hired as a vice president of community relations for Atlantic League’s Newark Bears, a position he left in November the same year.

In 2010, Gooden was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame.

Personal Life

Gooden got married to Monica Harris on 21st November 1987. The couple had four children before their divorce on 17th August 2004. Five years later, on 24th August 2009, Gooden got married to Monique Moore and the couple has two children. Gooden once dated Debra Hamilton and they have a child together.
