John Patrick McEnroe Jr. was born on February 16, 1959, in Wiesbaden, West Germany. His father, John Patrick McEnroe was an American stationed with the United States Air Force and his mother, Katherine McEnroe was a homemaker
His family moved back to Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, New York, when John was nine months old. John has two younger brothers, Mark and Patrick McEnroe.

John McEnroe began his career by winning the doubles at the French Open with Mary Carillo as an 18-year-old amateur in 1977. Thereafter, he made it through the qualifying tournament at Wimbledon but lost in the semifinals of the main draw.
Subsequently, McEnroe advanced to the semifinals of the US Open, losing to Connors. In 1979, he partnered with Peter Fleming to win the Wimbledon Doubles title which was followed by a win in the US Open Doubles. McEnroe also won the men’s singles US Open title, his first Grand Slam singles title.
In 1980, McEnroe lost the Wimbledon Men’s Singles final to Bjorn Borg. McEnroe got his revenge by beating Borg in the final of the 1980 US Open. He made it again to the 1981 Wimbledon men’s singles final against Borg, where he won in four sets.
McEnroe also faced Borg in the final of the 1981 US Open, winning in four sets to become the first male player since the 1920s to win three consecutive US Open singles titles. He went further to win his second WCT Final.
