She also has a brother, Camron and a sister, Annie Guthrie and together they were raised by their mother following the demise of their father. Her family moved to Tucson, Arizona, United States.
For her education, Guthrie attended Amphitheater High School in Tucson. Following her graduation, she proceeded to the University of Arizona where she obtained a B.A. in journalism in 1993. In 2002, she received a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, where she graduated Magna cum laude.

Savannah Guthrie started her journalism career with ABC affiliate KMIZ, in Columbia, Missouri, where she worked for two years. Thereafter, she returned to Tucson where she got a job with NBC affiliate KVOA in 1995. After five years, she took another job at WRC-TV, Washington, D.C.
After several years as a broadcast journalist, she returned to school, where she earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center. As an attorney, she worked for the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. In 2004, Guthrie became a national trial correspondent for CourtTV.
In September 2007, she became a correspondent for NBC News. A few months later, Guthrie was named a White House correspondent for NBC News.
